Mumbai, May 29: Veteran actress Asha Parekh recently appeared on the music reality show ‘Indian Idol.’ Alongside host Harsh Limbachiya, she revisited the iconic song ‘Jis Gali Mein Tera Ghar’ from the cult classic film ‘Kati Patang.’
After the special recreation, Asha Parekh shared an intriguing behind-the-scenes story from the original shoot featuring superstar Rajesh Khanna.
Reflecting on this memorable experience, Asha Parekh recounted, “We went to Nainital for the shoot of this song. At that time, Rajesh Khanna reached the lake, and we were supposed to get into a boat, but the crowd became so overwhelming that we couldn’t even board the boat.”
The seasoned actress elaborated on how the crowd created chaos at the shooting location. When fans realized they couldn’t meet Rajesh Khanna, they began throwing stones. “We started thinking, ‘What is happening?’ as stones began to rain down on us,” she said.
She further explained that filmmaker Shakti Samanta had no choice but to halt the shoot for safety reasons. The director stated that shooting could not continue under such circumstances, leading to a pack-up that day. The song was eventually filmed with a significant police presence to ensure safety.
Released in 1971, ‘Kati Patang’ is considered one of the most famous films in Hindi cinema. It is regarded as a milestone in Rajesh Khanna’s career, who is often referred to as Bollywood’s first superstar.
Directed by Shakti Samanta, the film featured Asha Parekh alongside Rajesh Khanna. Its storyline touched on themes of love, sacrifice, and identity. The memorable soundtrack includes evergreen songs like ‘Yeh Shaam Mastani,’ ‘Pyar Deewana Hota Hai,’ and ‘Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai,’ which continue to resonate with audiences even 55 years after its release.
