New Delhi, February 27: In a significant development, former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia have been acquitted in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case linked to Delhi’s excise policy. The Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi granted relief to the top leaders of the Aam Aadmi Party on Friday.
During the court hearing, both Kejriwal and Sisodia were present, while other accused, including K Kavita and Aman Deep Dhal, appeared via video conferencing. The judge expressed gratitude to each lawyer before delivering the verdict.
The court acquitted all 23 accused in the alleged liquor scam case, criticizing the CBI for shortcomings in its investigation. The judge stated that there was no substantial conspiracy or criminal intent behind the excise policy.
The court raised questions about the CBI’s charge sheet, highlighting numerous deficiencies lacking evidence from any witness or statement. It noted that the prosecution’s case could not withstand judicial scrutiny, as the CBI attempted to fabricate a conspiracy narrative based solely on assumptions.
Judge Jitendra Singh expressed displeasure over the CBI’s failure to submit a copy of the confessional statement. The court also objected to the use of the term “South Lobby” in the charge sheet.
This case pertains to the Delhi government’s excise (liquor) policy for 2021-22, which faced allegations of corruption. Following a report from former Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena recommended a CBI investigation.
Subsequently, the CBI registered a case and initiated an inquiry. On February 26, 2023, the agency arrested Manish Sisodia. Later, on March 21, 2024, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Arvind Kejriwal after extensive questioning. The CBI then took him into custody from jail on June 26.
