Mumbai, March 14: In a significant development, the police custody of nine individuals arrested in connection with a fraudulent insurance claim of ₹50 lakh has been extended. This scam involved staging the death of a two-wheeler rider in Jalgaon district’s Chalisgaon taluka.
The case has seen charges filed against the deceased’s family, a medical officer from Chalisgaon Rural Hospital, and four police officers from Mehunbare police station for fraud. Initially, all nine accused were remanded to police custody for five days. Following this, the Chalisgaon court extended their custody by four days, now lasting until March 17.
The hearing is taking place in the Chalisgaon Sessions Court under Justice Meenakshi Dhanraj. Advocate Ramesh Khandu Mane Ganeshpurkar represents the government, while the accused are defended by Advocates Jitesh Poddar, Sandeep Sonawane, and Dheeraj Pawar.
After the initial five-day police remand, the nine accused were presented again in court. The police requested an extension of the remand to further investigate various aspects of the case. The court granted this request, allowing the accused to remain in custody until March 17.
According to reports, the incident occurred last year when a two-wheeler rider from Malegaon was allegedly hit by a four-wheeler at Dahiwad Fata in Chalisgaon taluka. The family claimed that the injured individual died during treatment at a local hospital.
However, upon investigation by the insurance company, it was revealed that the entire incident was a fabricated scheme to obtain insurance money. It was discovered that the deceased, Rajendra Shalinder Jadhav, had actually passed away a year earlier due to a severe liver disease.
Rajendra Jadhav had taken out a personal accident insurance policy worth ₹50 lakh from Shri Ram General Insurance Company Limited, with a claim submitted by his wife, Aruna Rajendra Jadhav. The claim stated that Rajendra was traveling with Sambhaji Shivaji Patil from Dahiwad to Malegaon when they were struck by a Thar vehicle, resulting in severe injuries that led to his death at Chalisgaon Rural Hospital. A case was also registered at Mehunbare police station regarding this incident.
Following the claim submission, the insurance company appointed an agency to conduct an investigation. The inquiry uncovered numerous irregularities, confirming that the claim was fraudulent and intended for deceitful purposes.
Additionally, it was revealed that Rajendra Jadhav had claimed general and life insurance policies from ten other insurance companies. This indicated that the entire narrative of the accident and death was fabricated, with records manipulated and evidence falsified.
Police investigations have implicated Aruna Rajendra Jadhav, Sambhaji Shivaji Patil, and the driver-owner of the Mahindra Thar vehicle in this conspiracy. Furthermore, charges have been filed against the former medical officer at Chalisgaon Rural Hospital, Mandar Karambalekar, and police personnel Mahendra Patil, Ravindra Eknath Battish, Sachin Ashok Nikam, and Sunil Ashok Nikam for preparing fake documents. The police continue to investigate this case further.
