New Delhi, May 6: Arvind Kejriwal, the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of hijacking and destroying democracy. Speaking in the presence of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, he addressed AAP legislators, highlighting the pro-government trends that have emerged despite four years in power.
Kejriwal emphasized that the government enjoys widespread public support. He launched a fierce attack on the BJP regarding vote manipulation, the ‘theft’ of Rajya Sabha seats, and depriving the state of its rights.
After submitting a memorandum to the President, Kejriwal addressed the legislators at the official residence of the Punjab Chief Minister, Kapurthala House. He remarked that it has been four years since their government was formed, with only ten months remaining until the next elections. It is rare to see praise for a government so close to elections. Typically, after four years, a strong anti-incumbency wave is expected. However, he noted that in Punjab, there is no anti-incumbency sentiment; instead, there is a wave of support for the government. People are openly praising the Punjab government for its good work.
Expressing concern for democracy, the AAP leader stated that a significant crisis has emerged across the country. The BJP has hijacked and destroyed democracy, showing indifference even after winning elections.
He accused the BJP of using agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to exert pressure, employing money power, buying and selling legislators, breaking parties, toppling governments, imprisoning leaders, and manipulating votes. He cited recent events in West Bengal as not being elections, noting similar occurrences in Bihar, Maharashtra, and even in his own constituency, New Delhi.
Kejriwal recounted his experience in the New Delhi assembly constituency, where he had 148,000 votes before his imprisonment, but upon his return, only 106,000 votes remained. In just six months, approximately 42,000 votes were canceled. He had won the last election by 30,000 votes, but after the cancellation of those votes, he lost by 3,000. He questioned how one could win when all votes are canceled, stating that this is happening nationwide and democracy is in peril—the democracy for which martyrs like Bhagat Singh and Subhas Chandra Bose sacrificed their lives.
Reflecting on past elections, he recalled the wave in favor of Narendra Modi in 2014. After the government was formed in May 2014, the BJP consistently won elections in Haryana, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand. However, in February 2015, the BJP managed to win only three out of seventy seats in the Delhi elections.
He further illustrated his point with a story from the Ramayana about the Ashwamedha horse, which claimed dominion over any land it passed. He noted that just as Luv and Kush stopped the horse in Amritsar, the people of Delhi halted the BJP’s winning streak.
Despite this, he warned that a new wave is rising. The BJP is winning in Assam, Bengal, Bihar, Maharashtra, and Delhi. However, he predicted that the Ashwamedha horse will be stopped in the upcoming Punjab elections, leading to the downfall of the Modi government, which he believes will end through Punjab.
