
Navi Mumbai, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : A 38-year-old man died while in custody at the Navi Mumbai International Airport police station, sparking significant concern within the police department. Following the incident, authorities have initiated a judicial inquiry.
The deceased has been identified as Sanjay Kantu Yadav, a resident of Ananta Tower in Ulwe, Navi Mumbai. Originally from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Yadav was arrested on October 4, 2026, at 3:33 AM under Crime Register Number 18/2026, pertaining to sections 303(2) and 3(5) of the Indian Penal Code.
Prior to his arrest, Yadav underwent a medical examination at Panvel Rural Hospital, as per standard procedure. After his arrest, he was presented in court, where the judge granted police custody remand first from October 4 to October 6, and then from October 6 to October 8.
Police maintain that Yadav did not report any mistreatment or injuries during his court appearance. Furthermore, during his medical check-up, he did not mention any health issues or prior medical history.
Yadav was held in the lockup of the N.R.I. Sagari police station. On October 8, a guard on duty observed him exhibiting unusual behavior, clenching his fists and contorting his limbs. Recognizing the severity of his condition, officers promptly transported him to Meenatai Thackeray Hospital in Nerul for treatment.
He was admitted to the hospital at 12:50 AM on October 8, but despite medical efforts, he was declared dead at 1:36 AM by Dr. Ramdas Amburde. In response to the incident, police have registered a case of accidental death. The magistrate’s inquiry and post-mortem procedures are currently underway.
