Andhra Pradesh MLCs Bail Denied in Drivers Murder Case

Amaravati, May 13: A significant setback has occurred for Anant Babu, a Member of the Legislative Council from the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in Andhra Pradesh. The special court in Rajamahendravaram has denied his bail in the case concerning the murder of a Dalit driver, Vidhy Subrahmanyam. Anant Babu faces serious allegations of intimidating witnesses and attempting to bribe them to change their statements.

Anant Babu, who had previously secured bail from the Supreme Court, was arrested on April 24 in Rajamahendravaram. His arrest took place as he exited the court following a hearing on a petition to revoke his bail. He is currently held at the Rajamahendravaram Central Jail.

The case was registered on April 20 at the Sarapavaram police station in Kakinada. Four key witnesses in the murder case reported that Anant Babu had offered them substantial sums of money to alter their testimonies. When they refused the bribes, they were threatened with death.

Three witnesses claimed that supporters of the MLC forcibly confined them in an apartment, pressuring them to retract their previous statements and to provide false testimony in court. Following these allegations, the police filed a case against Anant Babu for attempting to influence witnesses and for making criminal threats.

Special Public Prosecutor Muppala Subbarao filed a petition in court, stating that the conditions of the bail granted by the Supreme Court had been violated. He argued that attempts to influence witnesses were against court orders, warranting immediate revocation of bail.

Anant Babu, whose real name is Anant Uday, is accused of murdering his former driver, Subrahmanyam. The 34-year-old Subrahmanyam died under suspicious circumstances on May 19, 2022, in Kakinada. Allegations suggest that Anant Babu himself transported the body to the victim’s home at 2 AM, claiming it was an accident.

However, the family expressed suspicions of foul play and refused to accept the body. This incident sparked significant protests from Dalit organizations and family members. Subsequently, the YSRCP suspended Anant Babu from the party.

Due to the failure to file a charge sheet within 90 days, he was granted default bail in December 2022. In June 2024, the newly formed TDP coalition government decided to re-investigate the case, leading to a directive from the SC/ST special court for a fresh inquiry in July 2025.
