Amaravati, August 16: The Monsoon session of the Andhra Pradesh Assembly will commence on Monday. Key topics for discussion include the impact of El Niño, issues concerning farmers, and the progress of the Amaravati capital project.
Governor S. Abdul Nazeer has called for the Monsoon session in both the Assembly and the Legislative Council. The state’s sole opposition party, the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), has already decided to boycott the Assembly in protest against the denial of Leader of Opposition (LOP) status.
The party plans to raise public interest issues in the Legislative Council and has announced its intention to address alleged irregularities in the mega DSC-2025 recruitment for teachers.
Assembly Speaker Chintakayala Ayyanna Patrudu stated on Sunday that all preparations for the session are complete. He emphasized that if YSRCP members participate and raise public issues, he will ensure that relevant ministers respond.
Ayyanna Patrudu remarked that it is the responsibility of YSRCP leader Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and other party legislators to attend the session and raise questions.
Last week, the Assembly Speaker questioned why YSRCP legislators, who have decided to skip the session, should receive salaries. He noted that legislators are elected to discuss public issues and raise problems from their constituencies in the Assembly.
He suggested that those who do not attend the session should not receive salaries and that a proper law should be created to address this matter.
The YSRCP has been boycotting the Assembly for nearly two years, demanding the status of Leader of Opposition. On August 12, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy stated that without LOP status, there is no point for party members to participate in the Assembly session.
He accused the coalition government led by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu of suppressing the opposition’s voice by withholding LOP status from the YSRCP.
Addressing a meeting of party legislators, Jagan Mohan Reddy urged them to remain vigilant and raise public interest issues in the Legislative Council while highlighting the failures of the Naidu government.
He stated, “We have a strong presence in the Council, so we must be the voice of the people and prioritize the issues we have consistently raised. This includes alleged irregularities in DSC recruitment, for which we have conducted ten types of protests over the past 74 days and presented evidence in support of our claims.”
He also mentioned the need to expose issues such as paper leaks, outsourcing scams, irregularities in sports quotas, and called for a CBI investigation into the alleged involvement of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s son and Education Minister Nara Lokesh.
Jagan Mohan Reddy instructed party legislators to also raise the issues of fee reimbursement and the ‘Vasathi Devena’ scheme, as over ₹9,100 crores and ₹3,300 crores are pending under these schemes, adversely affecting students.
