Mumbai, July 20: Actress Amrita Rao continues to hold a special place in the hearts of audiences with her portrayal of Poonam in the film ‘Vivah.’ In a recent media interaction, she shared insights about how director Sooraj Barjatya chose her for this significant role after noticing her brief performance in ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh.’
Amrita revealed that her screen time in that film was minimal, so she never anticipated landing such a substantial and memorable character.
Recalling her first meeting with Sooraj Barjatya, she said, “When I met him for the first time, I had no idea what he expected from me or how he envisioned my role. I arrived dressed like a modern Mumbai girl in jeans and a T-shirt. However, I soon learned that he wanted me to portray a simple small-town girl, Poonam, from Madhupur.”
She further added, “One thing I will never forget is when Sooraj ji told me he liked me in a film. At that moment, I thought he was referring to my hit movies, but he mentioned that he liked me in ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh.’ My screen time in that film was barely seven minutes, which was incredibly emotional for me, as such a small role left a lasting impression on a director like Sooraj Barjatya.”
In ‘Vivah,’ directed by Sooraj Barjatya, Amrita Rao starred alongside Shahid Kapoor. The simplicity and innocence of Poonam resonated deeply with audiences, a sentiment that persists today. Made on a modest budget of 8 crores, the film shattered several box office records, making the Amrita-Shahid pair a household favorite overnight.
Produced and distributed by Rajshri Productions, the romantic scenes, dialogues, and songs from ‘Vivah’ continue to captivate social media users even today.
