Washington, July 21: Jamieson Greer, the U.S. Trade Representative, defended President Donald Trump’s extensive tariff policy, stating it has bolstered America’s position in trade negotiations with several countries. He claims this strategy has facilitated progress in agreements with key trade partners, including India, and has accelerated efforts to revitalize the U.S. manufacturing sector.
In an interview with The New York Times, Greer acknowledged the legal challenges against the tariff policy and the criticism from economists and business organizations, yet he believes the government’s strategy is proving successful.
When asked if the tariff policy is effective, he responded, “Absolutely. I think we’ve achieved significant success. When you make a major policy shift and challenge large businesses or special interests, opposition is expected. Many want to maintain the old system, but we aim to change it.”
Greer explained that the Trump administration acted swiftly because it believed the growing U.S. trade deficit posed a serious threat to the economy. According to him, imposing broad tariffs has provided the U.S. with leverage to negotiate new trade agreements with various countries.
He noted that this policy has advanced negotiations with nations like the United Kingdom, the European Union, Indonesia, India, and Japan.
Greer also acknowledged that the U.S. Supreme Court had struck down a significant portion of the government’s tariff program. However, he expressed no regrets about the strategy.
He stated, “It’s not uncommon for our policies to face legal challenges. There will always be those who want to profit at the expense of American workers and will litigate to preserve their old business models.”
According to Greer, the administration is now pursuing its trade policy through alternative legal avenues and is committed to making substantial changes to the long-standing U.S. trade framework.
He added, “Ultimately, we are succeeding in changing trade policy. The trade deficit is decreasing. Companies are starting to produce again in America. We are successfully raising wages. We are achieving all these things. Therefore, I am pleased with our current position and direction.”
Greer clarified that the goal is not to change the world but to modify trade rules in favor of American interests.
He stated, “We are not against any specific country. Our aim is solely to protect American interests. If necessary, we will take essential steps against other countries, but our priority is America.”
Dismissed the political criticism surrounding the tariff policy, Greer emphasized that the effects will not be immediate but will manifest over the long term.
He remarked, “The purpose of this trade policy is to increase people’s incomes and strengthen manufacturing and agricultural production. Over time, the American public will see the benefits.”
Greer acknowledged that rebuilding the country’s manufacturing capacity will take time. However, he noted that positive signs are already emerging. According to him, investments in factories are increasing, wages in the manufacturing sector are improving, and industrial production capacity is also seeing enhancements.
