Mumbai, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : Central Home Minister Amit Shah visited the Asiatic Society in Mumbai on Sunday, September 13. During his visit, he explored the society’s ancient manuscripts, archival collections, and a special exhibition titled “Shri Ganesh Gyanarti,” which focuses on coins and other artifacts. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, the president of the society, noted that Shah took the time to understand the society’s work and blessed their efforts to promote Indian knowledge traditions globally.
Sahasrabuddhe shared that the Home Minister discussed various challenges the society faces and expressed his interest in helping to resolve them. He had previously invited Shah to see the society’s work firsthand, which the minister graciously accepted. A special exhibition was arranged for Shah and other dignitaries, showcasing select ancient texts and coins. This exhibition was specifically designed for the occasion, coinciding with the arrival of Ganesh Ji on Monday.
The society’s president expressed his joy at receiving Shah’s blessing, emphasizing the importance of spreading the light of Indian knowledge traditions. He also mentioned that Shah commented on how Indology was used as a political tool during British rule. Shah assured the society of his full support in their endeavors.
Sahasrabuddhe highlighted the ongoing need to preserve historical documents and manuscripts across various Indian cities. He stressed the importance of creating a safe haven for these treasures, which is the mission of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai.
He also noted that the Maharashtra Chief Minister has assured them of support to help elevate the institution’s status. On the topic of digitization, Sahasrabuddhe revealed that around 250,000 books and documents are housed at the society, with over half already digitized. He mentioned past funding from former minister Sudhir Mungantiwar and indicated that the current administration is committed to providing additional resources for this initiative.
