New Delhi, July 22: Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh visited Sonam Wangchuk at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram late Tuesday night to check on his condition. Wangchuk was transferred to Medanta from Safdarjung Hospital for further treatment.
On Tuesday evening, Wangchuk was discharged from Safdarjung Hospital. Following a directive from the Delhi High Court, he was transported to Medanta under tight security via ambulance. Hospital officials confirmed that he is now under the care of internal medicine specialist Dr. Sushila Kataria.
This meeting comes at a critical time as students continue their indefinite hunger strike, which marks its 25th day on Wednesday.
Earlier, on Monday, Wangchuk released a handwritten note from Safdarjung Hospital stating that he would continue his hunger strike until student leaders were allowed to meet with parliament members or until they could meet with MPs in the hospital.
On Tuesday, Wangchuk’s wife, Geetanjali J. Angmo, expressed that he has decided to maintain his hunger strike until Parliament acknowledges the alleged police action against protesters during the ‘March to Parliament.’
She alleged that students were beaten, subjected to baton charges, and hit with tear gas. Wangchuk has chosen to continue his hunger strike in solidarity with the students until their demands are heard in Parliament.
In response to accusations of protesters attacking police officers, Angmo stated, “I was in the truck when the police came in and attempted to forcibly take Abhijit away. Those around me formed a human chain to protect me. We all witnessed what happened to the students. If I had been alone and something happened to me, I would have defended myself as well.”
