Ahmedabad, July 22: A notorious liquor smuggler, wanted in seven cases related to Gujarat’s prohibition law, was arrested by the state surveillance unit in Ahmedabad. The suspect had been on the run since 2023. Authorities managed to apprehend him after tracking down his new location.
The arrest was executed under the directives of Director General of Police (DGP) G.S. Malik, who had ordered intensified action against illegal liquor, gambling, and other unlawful activities, including the capture of absconding suspects.
According to police reports, Sub-Inspector V.K. Rathod of the state surveillance unit received a tip-off about Nareshbhai, also known as Nario Rawal, who had changed his residence to evade capture. He was found living in the Shantipath Residency near the Ranasan Toll Plaza in Ahmedabad’s Naroda area.
Following the information, the team raided the specified address and apprehended the suspect. He was taken into custody around 2:30 AM on July 21 under Section 35(1)(j) of the Indian National Security Code (BNSC), 2023.
This arrest is linked to a case filed in 2024 at the Disa rural police station in Banaskantha district. The case involves violations of the Gujarat Prohibition Act, along with charges related to forgery and the use of false documents under the Indian Penal Code.
The suspect has been handed over to the state surveillance unit for further investigation. Police reported that an iPhone 17 Pro Max worth ₹45,000 was seized from him during the arrest.
According to the state surveillance unit, Rawal was wanted in seven cases related to the prohibition law from 2023 to 2026. These cases were registered at various police stations, including Disa Rural, Sector-21, Pethapur, and Kalol in Gandhinagar district, as well as the Palanpur West police station in Banaskantha district.
Authorities allege that Rawal imported Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) from Rajasthan and supplied it to various cities and districts in Gujarat.
Officials noted that over 35 cases related to the state’s prohibition law have been filed against Rawal. He has been declared a listed liquor smuggler by the Pethapur police station in Gandhinagar district.
The police revealed that there are ongoing hearings in various courts, including district, sessions, and JMFC courts, involving ten criminal cases against him. These cases include violations of the prohibition law and other offenses.
Police stated that arrest warrants were issued against him for failing to appear in court repeatedly. Investigators allege that he remained involved in the illegal liquor trade even while on the run.
