Allegations of Cash for Votes Shake Coimbatore Ahead of Tamil Nadu Elections

Chennai, April 22: Serious allegations of cash distribution to voters have emerged from several constituencies in Coimbatore ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. A formal complaint has been filed demanding the cancellation of voting in Coimbatore South.

A team of lawyers representing AIADMK candidate Amman Arjunan met with election observer Pratap Singh at the Coimbatore Government Guest House. They presented a detailed petition highlighting alleged violations of the election code of conduct.

According to the complaint, an unidentified individual from Karur district has been going door-to-door in the Coimbatore South constituency, distributing cash to voters in exchange for their votes.

The petition further alleges that recipients are being coerced and threatened to vote for a specific political party in return for money.

The lawyers claimed that such practices are not isolated incidents but are widespread throughout the constituency. They argued that these actions constitute a serious violation of electoral norms and undermine the integrity of the democratic process.

The legal team of the AIADMK candidate urged the Election Commission to take immediate and stringent action, including considering the cancellation of voting in Coimbatore South if the violations are proven substantial.

They emphasized that free and fair elections cannot be ensured in an environment where voters are allegedly influenced through bribery and intimidation.

The petition also pointed to widespread concerns regarding illegal financial activities related to the elections. It noted that several complaints regarding suspicious money laundering and irregular cash flow have already been submitted to the Chief Election Commissioner by various individuals.

Voting in Tamil Nadu is scheduled for April 23. This has increased pressure on election officials to act promptly on such complaints and ensure strict adherence to the model code of conduct. Authorities are expected to review the allegations and initiate necessary investigations to confirm the claims.

This development has heightened concerns about electoral malpractices in key constituencies, even as officials reaffirm their commitment to conducting free, fair, and transparent elections across the state.
