New Delhi, April 22: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken a firm stance regarding Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s alleged use of the term “terrorist” in reference to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The ECI has issued a notice demanding clarification within 24 hours.
According to sources, the commission views this comment as a potential violation of the election code of conduct, particularly concerning provisions that require maintaining decorum and avoiding inflammatory or offensive language during the electoral period.
This action by the Election Commission follows a meeting on Wednesday between a delegation from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the commission, where they lodged a strong protest against Kharge’s remarks. The BJP has called for strict action, asserting that it should serve as a “precedent” for others.
The high-level BJP delegation included Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju, Nirmala Sitharaman, and Arjun Ram Meghwal, along with the party’s National General Secretary Arun Singh. All leaders urged the Election Commission to intervene and take action against Kharge’s “poisonous statement.”
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju expressed deep concern and outrage over the offensive language used against the Prime Minister, demanding immediate attention to the matter. He stated, “Kharge calling Prime Minister Modi a ‘terrorist’ is not just a comment; it is a serious insult to the entire nation. Such shameful conduct cannot be normalized.”
The controversy erupted on Tuesday during a press conference in Chennai when Kharge used the term “terrorist” in response to a question about the Prime Minister. However, he later clarified that his statement was “misunderstood.”
Kharge explained, “I did not mean to imply that PM Modi is a terrorist. My intention was to highlight that people are being intimidated and that institutions and agencies are being used to instill fear.” He criticized the current government for creating an atmosphere of fear.
He further alleged that several key institutions, including investigative agencies, are operating under political pressure, undermining democratic standards.
Following his remarks, political tensions have escalated, with numerous BJP leaders, including Union Ministers and MPs, launching sharp attacks against Kharge and the Congress party.
BJP leaders have labeled the statement as “irresponsible” and “unacceptable,” demanding an apology and accusing Congress leadership of lowering the level of political discourse.
