Miami, March 27: In a stunning display at the Miami Open, Germany’s Alexander Zverev triumphed over Argentina’s Francisco Cerundolo with a score of 6-1, 6-2, securing his place in the semifinals.
With this victory, the 27-year-old German player has set a record for reaching the semifinals of both Indian Wells and the Miami Open in the same season, marking a significant achievement in his career. Cerundolo, who reached the semifinals in 2022 and the quarterfinals in 2023 and 2025, struggled to match Zverev’s intensity. Earlier in the tournament, Cerundolo had delivered an impressive performance by defeating world number 10 Daniil Medvedev.
However, he was unable to maintain that momentum against Zverev in the quarterfinals, missing the chance to advance to the semifinals of the ATP Masters 1000. With this win, Zverev has now claimed his fourth consecutive victory over Cerundolo, bringing their ATP head-to-head record to 4-3 in Zverev’s favor.
Zverev is now focused on his upcoming semifinal match against Italy’s Jannik Sinner, who has a 7-4 lead over Zverev after winning their last six encounters. Following his advancement to the 25th ATP Masters 1000 semifinal, Zverev stated, “Saturday will be the toughest test. I’m looking forward to it. I feel great and hope to continue this performance.”
Sinner, having secured his semifinal spot by defeating American Frances Tiafoe 6-2, 6-2, aims to become the first male player since Roger Federer in 2017 to complete the ‘Sunshine Double’ by winning both Indian Wells and the Miami Open in the same year.
Sinner’s service game was impressive, losing only 9 points, and his overall performance rating of 9.65 significantly exceeds the ATP Tour average of 7.29.
