
Northampton, May 12: Uncapped bowler Alexa Stonehouse has been called up to the England women’s cricket team as a cover for the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced on Monday that the left-arm fast bowler will be part of the remaining matches in the series.
Stonehouse will join the team in Northampton ahead of training on Tuesday. The second match of the series will take place on Wednesday at the County Ground, where she will be available for selection.
In a statement, the ECB said, “We have called up Warwickshire seam bowler Alexa Stonehouse as a cover for the remainder of the Metro Bank ODI series. She will join the team in Northampton before training on Tuesday and ahead of the second match at the Sink County Ground on Wednesday.”
Notably, fast bowler E.C. Wong is facing fitness issues and will undergo a hamstring scan. The ECB further stated, “Fast bowler E.C. Wong will go for a scan on her hamstring, and the team’s medical staff will conduct further assessments.”
The 21-year-old Stonehouse was part of the England team in the ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, where she took six wickets at an average of 11.33 across five matches.
On Sunday, England secured a thrilling one-wicket victory against New Zealand in the first match of the ODI series. In the match held at Chester-le-Street, New Zealand was bowled out for just 210 runs in 48.4 overs. Maddie Green scored 88 runs, while captain Amelia Kerr contributed 55 runs. For the hosts, Lauren Bell, Tilly Coulthard-Coleman, and captain Charlie Dean each took two wickets.
In response, England chased down the target in 48.2 overs. Maia Bouchier scored 59 runs, while Dean added 31 runs. Freya Kemp chipped in with 30 runs. For New Zealand, Rosemary Mair took three wickets, and Amelia Kerr claimed two.
Following the ODI series, both teams will compete in a T20 series. This will also serve as preparation for the Women’s T20 World Cup, which will be held in England from June 12 to July 5.
