
Mumbai, April 14: Ajita Ravindran triumphed in the Women’s Singles 45+ category at the GD Birla Memorial Inter-Club Badminton Tournament, defeating Pooja Jhalani. After losing the first game 24-26, Ajita made a remarkable comeback, winning the second game 21-19. Both players fought fiercely for every point, but Ajita secured victory in the decisive game with a score of 21-18.
In the Men’s Doubles 110+ category, the duo of Bibhash Chatterjee and Shiv Thakur delivered an impressive performance, defeating the top-seeded pair of Gautam Loud and Shailesh Daga in straight games, 21-12, 21-15.
Vikrant Karanjkar showcased excellent skill in the Men’s Singles 45+ category, overcoming top seed Sachin Bharti with scores of 21-6, 21-19. Meanwhile, in the Mixed Doubles 80+ category, Hemant Duggal and Shweta Thakur recorded one of the most lopsided victories of the finals, defeating Sandeep Mohan and Tejaswi Sawant Desai 21-10, 21-4.
Earlier, the top two seeds in the Women’s Singles 45+ category, Priya Ambecker and Namita Mehta-Vijaykar, were eliminated in surprising upsets. Top seed Priya lost to Pooja Jhalani 6-21, 13-21, while second seed Namita put up a better fight but ultimately fell 14-21, 21-15, 11-21.
Seeded teams also faced defeats in the Men’s Doubles 110+ and Mixed Doubles 80+ categories. In Mixed Doubles, the top-seeded pair of Shailesh Daga and former international player Aparna Popat were beaten by Sandeep Mohan and Tejaswi Sawant 21-14, 19-21, 21-9. The second-seeded team also faced disappointment as Shiv Thakur and Naheed Divecha lost to Hemant Duggal and Shweta Thakur 21-12, 21-16.
However, Daga found some relief by teaming up with Gautam Lad to win the Men’s Doubles 110+ title. This top-seeded pair defeated Anees Badami and Vipul Patel 21-18, 21-8 to secure their place in the title round.
