Srinagar, April 14: In Budgam, Jammu and Kashmir, police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against an individual for allegedly running a fake WhatsApp account in the name of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).
According to police officials, credible information was received by Budgam police station regarding Sameer Ali Bhat, a resident of Pallar Budgam. He was reportedly distributing screenshots of chats from the fake WhatsApp account impersonating the SSP of Budgam and claiming to be a close associate of the senior police officer to influence the public.
Upon investigation, it was revealed that the individual is involved in several FIRs and was using the mobile number +91-9622126997 to operate the fraudulent WhatsApp account. He was also sharing chat screenshots to misuse the identity of the SSP for gaining undue influence.
In Jammu and Kashmir, as in other parts of the country, the widespread use of the internet and social media has led to an increase in cyber crimes, online fraud, and scams. While these platforms provide immense benefits to the public, they also pose significant challenges for law enforcement agencies.
The misuse of social media for anti-national and criminal purposes forms the basis of cyber crimes in Jammu and Kashmir. Acting swiftly on this information, Budgam police station has filed FIR number 90/2026 under Section 319 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 66-C of the Information Technology Act.
Budgam police have advised the public to remain vigilant and not fall prey to such fraudulent attempts. Citizens are urged to use only the official contact numbers available on government websites when reaching out to police officials and other government departments.
The public is also requested to report any suspicious activities immediately to the nearest police station to ensure timely legal action.
