Washington, May 29: U.S. Vice President JD Vance stated that artificial intelligence (AI) could fundamentally change the nature of warfare in the future. However, he emphasized that decisions involving life and death should always remain in human hands. Vance asserted that America must never rely on machines for such moral choices.
Addressing the graduating cadets at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Vance highlighted the rapid advancements in AI, cyber operations, and autonomous systems that are transforming the battlefield. These developments pose new challenges for military officials.
“My biggest concern regarding AI is how it will change warfare,” Vance remarked. He referenced a recent comment by Pope Leo XIV, stating that this issue is not just about technology but also about ethics.
Vance quoted the Pope’s advice from a recent document, urging people not to delegate the responsibility for crucial moral decisions to digital technology.
He told the cadets that AI will become a significant part of the military in the coming years, but its role should be to assist humans, not replace them. “If future warfare is to align with the moral values of our ancestors, then decisions about life and death must be made by humans, not machines,” he stated.
Vance urged future military officers to take their responsibilities seriously. He encouraged them to use technology to enhance their capabilities but warned against becoming overly reliant on it.
“Make technology a tool for your development, but do not surrender to it. Warfare is conducted by humans, and your intellect, along with your heart, is far more important than any AI,” he said.
He noted that new officers are entering the military during a time of increasing geopolitical uncertainty and rapid changes in military technology. “You are graduating at a time when ignoring the uncertainties of warfare has become nearly impossible,” he added.
The Vice President warned that future officers will operate in an environment where autonomous systems, AI, and cyber operations will play a significant role. He cautioned that America’s adversaries are closely monitoring its every move.
“Our rivals study America every day. They are trying to understand our military strategies, industrial capabilities, political differences, and our ways of operation. They are also keeping an eye on new officers like you,” Vance said.
He praised the members of the U.S. Air Force and Space Force currently involved in military operations, stating that American military power continuously creates new possibilities on the battlefield.
“When the President needs a solution to a challenge, our Air Force and Space Force provide new options. Through their courage and dedication, they are making the impossible possible in every mission,” Vance noted.
He also mentioned that the U.S. government is making significant investments in modernizing the military, including projects like the F-47 fighter jet and the Golden Dome missile defense system. Efforts are also underway to increase the defense budget and improve the living standards of soldiers.
This statement comes at a time when militaries worldwide are rapidly adopting AI technology for intelligence gathering, surveillance, target identification, and decision-making in warfare.
