Ahmedabad, August 31: The Ahmedabad Crime Branch of Gujarat Police has apprehended a 35-year-old suspect, believed to be a member of the notorious ‘Chhara Gang,’ who was wanted in multiple cases. The accused faces charges related to robbery, theft, and violations under the Gujarat Control of Terrorism and Organized Crime Act, with a total of seven cases registered against him. Police recovered cash and other items valued at ₹8.68 lakh from his possession.
The arrested individual has been identified as Vishal, alias Bhau Tanwani. He was taken into custody in connection with a case filed at the Krishna Nagar police station, where he allegedly robbed a person carrying ₹50 lakh in cash from an angadia firm.
According to police reports, the victim was driving near Maruti Plaza, located in front of ADC Bank in the Krishna Nagar area. During this time, the accused and his accomplices falsely claimed that the victim’s vehicle had been involved in an accident, forcing him to stop.
While the victim was distracted in a heated discussion, another gang member broke the car window and fled with the cash inside.
Following the incident, all three suspects managed to escape. Authorities revealed that the arrested individual was also wanted in cases registered at various police stations, including Sarkhej, Bopal, Odhav, Sola High Court, and Ellisbridge.
The seven cases involve various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including robbery, theft, and other related crimes.
The Crime Branch stated that the accused and his associates operated as an organized gang. They would monitor the activities of angadia firms and target individuals carrying cash.
Police allege that the gang members would follow their victims on motorcycles, using accidents or disputes as a pretext to stop them. While one member engaged the victim in conversation, others would use tools to open the motorcycle’s trunk and steal cash and valuables.
In incidents targeting cars, the gang would distract the driver to steal cash bags placed in the front seat.
According to police, the gang also targeted parked vehicles. They would break car windows using specialized tools to steal items inside.
To conceal their identities, the suspects wore helmets, covered their faces with scarves, changed clothes during the crime, and altered motorcycle license plates.
The Crime Branch seized ₹7.5 lakh in cash, two mobile phones worth ₹18,000, a motorcycle valued at ₹1 lakh, a window-breaking tool, an Allen key, and a helmet from the accused. The total estimated value of the seized items is ₹8.68 lakh.
Police records indicate that Vishal, alias Bhau, has previous cases registered against him at various police stations, including Navrangpura, Odhav, Vastrapur, Adalaj, and the Kashmiri Gate police station in North Delhi.
These cases include charges of theft, robbery, and criminal conspiracy under the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Following his arrest, the accused has been handed over to the relevant police authorities for further legal action.
