Tragic Building Collapse in South Delhi Claims Lives, Officials Vow Action

New Delhi, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : In a heartbreaking incident in South Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, a multi-story building collapsed, leaving five people dead and many others injured. Harsh Malhotra, the Delhi BJP president and Union minister, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. He assured that the central government, the Delhi government, and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) stand with the affected families and that rescue operations are the top priority.

Malhotra emphasized the urgent need to rescue those trapped in the debris and provide them with medical assistance. A detailed investigation will follow to ascertain the actual causes of the accident. Given that the building was occupied, it is crucial to determine the reasons behind the collapse. If negligence or responsibility is found during the inquiry, strict action will be taken against the relevant officials and engineers.

The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon when a five-story building with a basement suddenly fell. As of now, five fatalities have been reported, with fears that more individuals may be trapped under the rubble. The police indicated the collapse happened around 1:30 PM. The building was used as a paying guest accommodation for students, housing approximately 40 residents, many of whom were studying at Delhi University’s South Campus.

Emergency services, including the Delhi Police, NDRF, Delhi Fire Service, and civil defense teams, quickly arrived on the scene. Rescuers utilized gas cutters and JCB machines to clear the debris and free those trapped inside. So far, 11 people have been successfully rescued. Special lighting and oxygen cylinders were arranged to continue rescue efforts into the night.

Authorities reported that the building, approximately 40 to 50 years old, was undergoing repair work in the basement. Initial investigations suggest that the recent heavy rainfall may have contributed to the collapse alongside the ongoing repairs.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, along with Lieutenant Governor T.S. Sandhu and Mayor Pravesh Wahi, visited the site to oversee rescue operations. The Chief Minister later went to AIIMS to meet with the injured and check on their conditions. The Chief Minister’s Office stated that all agencies are coordinating effectively and are committed to ensuring the safe rescue of the trapped individuals.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences regarding the incident. A message from the Prime Minister’s Office described the building collapse in Satya Niketan as a deeply tragic event. Modi conveyed his sympathies to the families of the deceased and wished for the swift recovery of the injured.

Meanwhile, the administration has indicated that an investigation into the incident will commence, and actions will be taken against those found responsible based on the findings of the report.
