Ahmedabad, May 16: Ahmedabad Civil Hospital announced on Friday that it has facilitated a total of 1,032 organ and tissue donations over the past six years. According to officials, the hospital is emerging as one of the leading centers for deceased organ donation in India.
In a recent case, 29-year-old Dharmendra Darbar from Mehsana district was declared brain dead on May 14. He sustained severe injuries in a road accident on May 4.
Since the accident, he had been receiving treatment at the Civil Hospital. Dr. Jitu Parikh and his team from the Medicine Department made every effort to save him, but unfortunately, they could not.
Following counseling, Dharmendra’s wife, brother, and sister agreed to donate his organs, with support from local citizen P.S. Patel and family members Mahendrabhai Jhala and Lalsingh Jhala.
Officials reported that this decision led to the donation of a liver and two kidneys, providing a new lease on life for three critically ill patients.
Medical Superintendent Rakesh Joshi stated that in the past six years, 240 donors have contributed to the hospital’s organ donation program.
He noted, “We have received 794 organs from 240 donors. Additionally, there have been 194 eye donations and 44 skin donations, resulting in a total of 238 tissues. Overall, 1,032 organs and tissues have been donated through this program.”
Dr. Joshi further explained that the hospital has received 443 kidneys, 214 livers, 76 hearts, 34 lungs, 19 pancreases, 6 hands, and 2 small intestines to date.
According to officials, this program has enabled life-saving transplants for patients struggling with various organ failures, while also raising awareness about deceased organ donation.
In a separate decision, the state government has increased the monthly stipend for intern doctors at Siddhpur Dental College and Hospital from ₹12,000 to ₹20,160. Health Minister Prabhul Pansheria stated that this decision was made to honor the contributions of young doctors during their internships.
He mentioned, “The college dean and administrative officials requested an increase in the stipend in line with government standards, which led to the approval of this amendment.”
Officials noted that the increased stipend aims to support intern doctors who are consistently engaged in clinical duties and patient care during their training.
