Washim, February 15: The recent cheating incidents during the 12th board exams in Maharashtra’s Washim district have raised serious questions about the education department’s operations. Despite claims of a “cheating-free campaign,” a significant number of students were caught cheating in the Manora and Risod talukas, prompting the initiation of accountability measures.
Initially, 19 students were caught cheating in Manora, including 17 from a single school in Rui Gosta. On February 12, 21 students were apprehended at an exam center in Risod, while actions were also taken against three students from another school. These ongoing incidents have cast doubt on the integrity of the examination process.
Flying squad teams conducted surprise inspections and caught students using cheat sheets and other unfair means. In accordance with board regulations, cases have been filed against the students involved.
Meanwhile, some staff members on duty at the relevant exam centers have also been identified. Following preliminary investigations, action letters have been issued against certain personnel, and the department is now seeking their responses.
The most pressing question remains: how could such a large number of students cheat when CCTV cameras and monitoring systems were in place at the exam centers? Was this solely the students’ fault, or was there a serious lapse in oversight?
Parents and citizens are demanding a fair investigation, insisting that strict action be taken against any staff found guilty, to ensure that the “cheating-free campaign” does not remain just a claim. All eyes are now on the administration’s next steps.
