Aizawl, June 30: On the occasion of ‘Remna Ni’ (Mizoram Peace Accord Day), Mizoram Governor General V.K. Singh (Retired) emphasized that lasting peace is crucial for realizing the national vision of a ‘Developed India’ by 2047.
The signing of the Mizoram Peace Accord on June 30, 1986, marked the end of two decades of insurgency and conflict in the northeastern state. Following this historic agreement, Mizoram was granted full statehood and became the 23rd state of India on February 20, 1987.
Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the historic peace accord, the Governor congratulated the people of Mizoram, describing the day as a pivotal moment in the state’s history. In his message, General Singh stated, “This day rejuvenates our collective hopes for a peaceful, progressive, and developed Mizoram. The signing of this accord forty years ago established lasting peace on our land, ended years of struggle, and initiated a new chapter of unity, reconciliation, and development.”
He acknowledged the contributions of all those who played a role in establishing and maintaining peace in the state. The Governor remarked, “Our visionary leaders, organizations, civil society groups, churches, elders, and every individual have demonstrated wisdom, courage, and unwavering commitment for the betterment of Mizoram.”
He also expressed deep gratitude towards the brave individuals who sacrificed their lives for Mizoram, noting that today the state is regarded as one of the most peaceful in the country. Their sacrifices and dreams for a better future continue to inspire us.
The Governor highlighted that peace is not merely the absence of conflict but a fundamental necessity for the progress of individuals and nations. Without peace and harmony, no meaningful development can take place.
General Singh asserted that peace creates an environment conducive to promoting human rights, democratic norms, and constitutional values. It fosters trust, tolerance, and brotherhood among people. In today’s world, filled with uncertainties and inequalities, there is no alternative to the principle of peaceful coexistence.
As Mizoram celebrates this historic achievement, the Governor urged the people to preserve and strengthen this precious gift of peace, while remaining united and vigilant to protect the state’s rich social fabric.
He stressed that true peace should serve as the foundation for comprehensive development in education, economic growth, infrastructure, healthcare, cultural advancement, innovation, investment, and inclusive progress. We still have a long journey ahead to achieve this goal.
