New Delhi, August 25: Aam Aadmi Party leader Somnath Bharti has launched a verbal attack on the Delhi government. He accused the BJP of failing to deliver on its promises to the people of Delhi, nearly a year and a half after coming to power. Bharti highlighted several issues, including the cleaning of the Yamuna River, waterlogging, and corruption, criticizing the BJP government for its lack of progress.
Bharti stated that the people of Delhi had hoped to benefit from having the same party in power at both the central and state levels. Despite the BJP holding key positions, including the Mayor, Prime Minister, Chief Minister, Home Minister, and Lieutenant Governor, he claimed that the expected improvements in Delhi’s situation have not materialized.
He pointed out that the BJP made significant promises before taking office, such as beautifying Delhi and cleaning the Yamuna, but these commitments remain unfulfilled after one and a half years. The problem of waterlogging has worsened during the rainy season, even in areas where the AAP government had previously worked to prevent such issues. Residents are facing significant difficulties due to this situation.
Accusing the BJP government of corruption, Bharti claimed that instead of working for the public, the government has misappropriated taxpayer money. He mentioned alleged scandals, including the rice scam, issues related to ration for the poor, a supposed ₹650 crore scandal in medicine procurement, and the bicycle purchase case. In the bicycle case, he alleged that while bicycles are available in the market for around ₹4,200, the government spent about ₹7,000 on inferior models.
Questioning the BJP government’s intentions, he suggested that their focus is more on corruption than on development. However, no response from the relevant authorities has been provided regarding his allegations.
Bharti appealed to Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, urging that the people of Delhi should not be harassed. He emphasized that, considering the support for Arvind Kejriwal among the public, the BJP government should refrain from engaging in vindictive politics. He accused the government of attempting to intimidate political opponents, particularly targeting the case involving former minister Satyendar Jain, which he claims is politically motivated.
He alleged that the BJP’s so-called ‘toolkit’ includes Congress, asserting that Congress raises complaints, after which the BJP government uses investigative agencies to take action. He described this process as a strategy to target AAP leaders. Referring to the liquor policy case, he noted that the court had dismissed actions due to insufficient evidence. He accused the BJP of ramping up investigations around the time of the Punjab elections, labeling it a political strategy.
Bharti also criticized the BJP regarding matters related to Punjab. He mentioned the arrest of Sanjeev Arora through ED and CBI actions and stated that a senior AAP leader from Punjab is now being targeted. He remarked that he has never encountered a case like this in his legal career. If similar actions occur against the current government following a change in power, it could lead to dangerous levels of political retribution.
He accused the BJP government of misusing central investigative agencies and government institutions. He warned that no government should use investigative and administrative powers to suppress political opponents. He cautioned that political power is not permanent, and the current ruling party could face similar actions after a change in power. Expressing confidence in the judiciary, he stated that he hopes the court will provide justice for Satyendar Jain.
Bharti made a bold claim regarding Punjab’s politics, asserting that the AAP government in Punjab will secure a strong mandate based on its performance. He expressed confidence that, despite political controversies and actions by investigative agencies, the AAP will reach out to the public based on its work. He believes that the party can achieve a favorable mandate in Punjab again.
