New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has strongly denied the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) allegations that Delhi Assembly Leader of Opposition Atishi insulted a Sikh Guru. On Thursday, AAP leaders sent a letter to the Delhi Assembly Speaker rejecting these claims as baseless and politically motivated.
In the letter, AAP demanded the disqualification of BJP MLA Kapil Mishra, who made the accusations, calling his charges unfounded. AAP leaders Sanjeev Jha, Mukesh Ahlawat, and MLA Jarnail Singh spoke to news agencies explaining the party’s stance on the controversy.
Sanjeev Jha stated that the letter to the Assembly Speaker includes three key demands: firstly, the revocation of Kapil Mishra’s membership for posting false videos on his social media accounts that bear no relation to the truth. Secondly, the disqualification of all BJP MLAs who sent the letter to the Speaker for six months. Thirdly, the public release of the original video clip, which is the basis of the allegation, so that the public can know the factual details.
Responding to BJP’s demand for Atishi’s apology, Sanjeev Jha said the BJP should be the one to apologise instead. He accused BJP leaders of dragging the name of the Sikh Guru for their political gains, which is unacceptable.
He added that the Assembly Speaker has assured AAP of prompt action after reviewing the matter. AAP has also presented two videos showing what Atishi originally said and how it was distorted by political adversaries to malign her. Jha expressed confidence that once the raw footage is made available, the truth will be clear.
MLA Mukesh Ahlawat accused BJP of creating misleading videos to confuse the public, urging the release of the full original video to reveal the truth. He demanded Kapil Mishra’s resignation for exploiting the Sikh Guru’s name for political advantage, describing such actions as unfortunate.
Similarly, MLA Jarnail Singh described the video circulated by BJP as misleading and an attempt to mislead Delhi’s citizens. He called for strict action against those responsible, saying such conduct is unacceptable.
On the other hand, BJP leader Kapil Mishra defended his position during a media interaction, stating that the video should be investigated and the truth will emerge. He challenged Atishi to face the Assembly but noted her absence from the House. Mishra said Atishi’s actions are unforgivable, claiming that from 1947 till today, no one has insulted the Sikh Guru as she allegedly did.
He also addressed Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, saying that anyone who respects the Guru will not forgive him for supporting Atishi. Mishra accused Kejriwal of shamefully backing Atishi and said both should be punished for their actions. He criticized AAP for their past speeches praising Sikh Gurus yet remaining silent now, urging Kejriwal to question Atishi’s conduct.
The dispute remains highly charged, with both parties seeking to assert their version of events while demanding accountability from the other side.
