387 Graduates Honored at Birsa Agricultural University Convocation in Ranchi

Ranchi, October 8 (Daily Kiran) : Birsa Agricultural University (BAU) in Ranchi held its ninth convocation ceremony on October 8, where 387 students received degrees across various disciplines. The graduates included 335 from undergraduate programs, 48 from postgraduate studies, and four PhD candidates. In recognition of their exceptional performance, 11 students were awarded gold medals, with one student receiving the Chancellor’s Gold Medal.

Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, the chief guest at the event, emphasized the need to align agricultural research with the real needs of farmers. He stated that the true success of agricultural research should be visible in the fields rather than confined to laboratories. Gangwar called for the development of techniques that enhance farmers’ incomes while conserving soil and water resources.

Highlighting the critical role of agriculture in the economy and the livelihoods of millions, he pointed out the increasing challenges posed by climate change, erratic rainfall, and soil degradation. Gangwar noted that the role of science and innovation in agriculture is becoming ever more significant, especially for small and marginal farmers. He asserted that technologies like artificial intelligence, drones, remote sensing, and precision agriculture must be practical and beneficial for farmers.

The governor addressed the geographical challenges of Jharkhand, where heavy rainfall often leads to water runoff and irrigation facilities are limited. He stressed the importance of water conservation, effective use of rainwater, and crop diversification tailored to local conditions.

Gangwar praised BAU’s contributions through advanced crop varieties, seed and plant material development, farmer training, and agricultural extension services. He urged the university to expand its scope in education, research, and innovation. The governor encouraged youth to think beyond traditional farming, highlighting the vast opportunities in agricultural startups, food processing, horticulture, animal husbandry, and aquaculture.

He also remarked on the vital role of young agricultural scientists, researchers, entrepreneurs, and students in achieving the ‘Developed India by 2047’ goal. Gangwar commended the increasing participation of women in education, science, agricultural research, and entrepreneurship.

In closing, he urged students to transfer their knowledge to the fields, bring science to farmers, and share innovations with society. He expressed that the true essence of education lies in its societal impact. During the ceremony, he also paid tribute to the late Rubi Soren, wife of former Chief Minister and prominent Jharkhand movement leader Shibu Soren, extending condolences to her grieving family.
