New Delhi, September 3: Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a profound Sanskrit verse on the social media platform ‘X’ on Thursday. He stated, “True talent, when nurtured in a positive environment, radiates incredible energy. This leads to success in endeavors and makes life meaningful.”
The Prime Minister quoted a Sanskrit shloka from the play ‘Malavikagnimitram’ by the great poet Kalidasa. The verse reads, “Paatravisheshena nyastam gunantarah vrajati shilpamadhatuh. Jalamiva samudrashuktau muktaphalatam payodasyah.” In Hindi, this translates to the idea that the worth and elevation of a person or object depend on the quality of the environment they receive. Just as ordinary water becomes a priceless pearl when it comes into contact with a shell, ordinary qualities can achieve supreme excellence and prestige when given the right and suitable support.
‘Malavikagnimitram’ is a Sanskrit play by Kalidasa that references the political events during the reign of Pushyamitra Shunga, the founder of the Shunga dynasty, and his son Agnimitra, along with the conflicts between the Shungas and the Greeks.
The shloka shared by PM Modi is from the first act of ‘Malavikagnimitram.’ It occurs during a dispute over superiority between two dance masters, Ganadasa and Hardatta. Ganadasa expresses confidence in the talent of his disciple Malavika, reciting the shloka before King Agnimitra.
The meaning of Ganadasa’s shloka emphasizes that when the art of a teacher or artist is entrusted to a particularly worthy disciple, its quality is significantly enhanced. Just as a raindrop falling from a cloud becomes a valuable pearl when it lands in a sea shell, so too does the potential of a gifted student flourish in the right environment.
