Bengaluru, August 21: Income Tax officials seized approximately ₹9 crore in cash from a car registered in Kerala near the Veerasandra signal in Bengaluru’s Electronic City on Friday.
The Income Tax Department alerted the Electronic City police about the illegal transportation of a large sum of cash. Acting on this information, the police stopped the vehicle and conducted a search, leading to the discovery and seizure of the cash.
Initial reports suggest that the cash belonged to a gold trader with a jewelry shop, who is reportedly from Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu. The Income Tax Department also conducted a search at the trader’s residence, where authorities allegedly found an additional ₹1.35 crore in cash.
The owner of the jewelry store has been detained for questioning in connection with the seizure. Income Tax officials are investigating the source of the money and its intended purpose.
Reports indicate that the seized cash was being transported in a car registered in Kerala, which was intercepted by the police. Further details regarding the origins of the money and its destination have yet to be disclosed.
It is noteworthy that on June 27, Bengaluru police seized ₹2.98 crore in cash without documentation and arrested two businessmen. This significant operation took place when the Mahalaxmi Layout police discovered the cash, stored in four bags, in a shed in Kurubarahalli without any valid paperwork.
In a previous incident in 2024, the City Crime Branch police in Belagavi seized ₹2.73 crore in cash being transported illegally without documentation. This cash was being moved from Sangli (Maharashtra) to Hubli (Karnataka) and was hidden in a modified cabin of a goods transport truck on the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Rohan Jagdish stated that upon receiving credible information about the illegal transportation of cash, a team led by Inspector Nandeshwar Kumbhar was formed, which successfully apprehended the vehicle. The cash was recovered with the help of investigation and mechanical assistance from the modified cabin. Two suspects from Sangli, Sachin Menkudale and Maruti Murgod, were arrested.
