New Delhi, August 21: Congress Rajya Sabha member and former Union Minister P. Chidambaram recently shared his views on Lok Sabha delimitation via a post on X. He emphasized that the distribution of Lok Sabha seats, the Tamil Nadu Assembly proposal, and the Congress Working Committee’s stance are aligned.
Chidambaram stated, “There should be no changes to the total of 543 Lok Sabha seats and the 39 parliamentary seats in Tamil Nadu. The Congress party believes that these current figures should be maintained for the next 25 years.” He expressed satisfaction that both the ruling party and the main opposition party in Tamil Nadu support this position.
The Tamil Nadu government has requested the central government to permanently maintain the total number of Lok Sabha members at 543. Additionally, it seeks to keep the existing ratio of Lok Sabha seats among states unchanged.
The proposal also insists on maintaining the current population ratios between states and implementing 33% women’s reservation in the upcoming 2029 Lok Sabha elections based on the existing 543 seats, prior to the enactment of the Women’s Reservation Bill.
It is noteworthy that the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 was introduced in the Lok Sabha on April 16. This bill proposed increasing Lok Sabha seats to 850 and expediting the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill passed in 2023. However, it failed to pass due to a lack of two-thirds special majority support from members present and voting in Parliament, which is constitutionally required.
Tamil Nadu has a total of 234 Assembly seats, comprising 189 general and 45 reserved seats, along with its 39 Lok Sabha seats.
