Youth Congress Activists Granted Bail in AI Summit Protest Case

New Delhi, March 2: The Patiala House Court has granted bail to nine individuals arrested during protests at the AI Summit. The Indian Youth Congress hailed this decision as a victory for democracy.

While the court released the nine activists, it denied bail to Siddharth Avadhut, who will remain in police custody for an additional four days.

The Youth Congress expressed their joy on the social media platform X, stating, “Satyamev Jayate.” They emphasized that the court’s decision to grant bail to their nine members, who protested against the anti-India trade agreement, signifies a triumph for democracy. They asserted that dissent is a fundamental right, not an act of treason.

In their statement, the Youth Congress thanked the judiciary for upholding the principles of democracy. They affirmed that their fight against the anti-India trade agreement will continue with even greater determination.

It is noteworthy that the Patiala House Court had reserved its judgment following earlier hearings in this case.

The petitioners argued that the charges carry a penalty of less than five years, which justifies bail. Their lawyer contended that granting bail is the norm, while denying it is the exception, thus it should be granted. After nine days of interrogation, they asserted that police custody is no longer necessary.

The petitioners also indicated that there is no risk of the accused fleeing the country or tampering with witnesses or evidence.

During the proceedings, the Delhi Police opposed the bail, citing a Supreme Court ruling in the Shaheen Bagh protest case. They stated that while the right to protest exists, it should not tarnish the nation’s image.
