Bhubaneswar, February 28: Angul police apprehended a 20-year-old man on Friday for the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl in the NTPC police station area of Odisha.
The suspect, identified as Ashish Naik, was arrested within 24 hours of the victim’s body being discovered.
According to police sources, the arrest followed a complaint filed by the victim’s family, leading to the registration of a missing person case on February 26. The family reported that the minor had gone to a nearby field but did not return home.
Upon receiving the report of the missing girl, NTPC police promptly registered an FIR and initiated a thorough search operation.
Angul police formed multiple search teams to expedite the search for the missing minor. They conducted extensive searches overnight in fields, forests, and water sources near the victim’s village.
The body was recovered on Friday morning, prompting the police to reclassify the case under relevant sections related to rape and murder.
Senior police officials arrived at the scene to assess the situation. They also stated that evidence collection was ongoing in accordance with forensic protocols. The district police established separate teams to apprehend the accused, conducting raids at various locations.
Based on continuous technical and ground investigations, police arrested the neighbor of the victim, Naik, within 24 hours of the body being found.
In an official press release, Angul police stated that the case has been registered as a Special Report (SR) and assigned to an officer of DSP rank for a thorough and timely investigation.
In another shocking case, Jagatsinghpur police arrested two individuals, including the victim’s boyfriend, on Friday in connection with the rape and murder of a woman in the Paradip area of the district.
