Bengaluru, June 7: Thirteen-year-old tennis prodigy Shristi Kiran from Bengaluru has made headlines by finishing as the runner-up at the ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors J100 tournament. In the final match, she faced the top seed from the USA, Ellery Mendel, and lost with scores of 4-6, 3-6. Despite battling cramps in the final stages, this young Indian athlete showcased remarkable spirit against her highly ranked opponent.
The final started with a fierce competition. Shristi took an early lead, going up 2-0, and even held a 3-1 advantage in the first set. However, Mendel made a strong comeback, clinching the set 6-4.
In the second set, Shristi was tied at 3-3 and had two game points that could have given her a crucial 4-3 lead. Unfortunately, persistent pain and cramps affected her movement, allowing the American player to seize control and secure the match.
Despite the loss, this tournament marked another significant achievement for Shristi, who arrived in Guatemala after an impressive streak of five consecutive ITF junior titles.
Her journey to the finals included several remarkable victories against seeded opponents. She began her campaign with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win over the host city’s Katia Maria Pemueller in the first round. In the pre-quarterfinals, she defeated the seventh seed, Sara Stoyanova, with a score of 6-1, 7-6 (1), followed by a tough quarterfinal match where she overcame Mexico’s fourth seed, Hen Estrada Cortes, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
Shristi then delivered her best performance of the week in the semifinals, defeating the USA’s second seed, Philippa Delgado, 6-2, 6-1 to secure her place in the title match. Last week, she reached her career-best junior ranking of 461, and her recent runner-up finish is expected to further improve her ranking.
After the championship match, Shristi expressed, “This tournament has been very special for me. Reaching the finals and playing against some very strong players has significantly boosted my confidence. Of course, I am disappointed not to win the title, but I have learned many valuable lessons this week.”
