Wyoming Cowboys Accept NIT Invitation, Set to Face Wichita State

New Delhi, March 17: In an era where financial considerations often overshadow tradition, Sundance Wicks and the Wyoming Cowboys have chosen to defy that trend.

As many college basketball programs opt out of non-NCAA Tournament postseason events, the significance of these tournaments has diminished. However, Wyoming is not following this path.

Following the announcement of the NCAA Tournament field, the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) reached out to various schools to extend invitations to this prestigious postseason event. Notably, San Diego State and Boise State declined their opportunities, clearing the way for Wyoming to participate in the NIT for the first time since 2022, marking their return to postseason play.

When asked about their decision to accept the invitation, Sundance Wicks provided a heartfelt response: “We will always accept an invitation to the National Invitation Tournament. If we don’t ever get an NCAA automatic qualifier bid or an at-large bid in March Madness, we’ll always accept this. It is our civic duty as basketball coaches to normalize playing basketball for as long as possible, as that is our job.”

Wicks further emphasized the importance of commitment, stating, “My wife can’t just wake up and decide to opt out of teaching. We need to normalize this, and the NIT field is outstanding. Kudos to Auburn for accepting the bid.”

In a final reflection, Wicks noted, “We are college basketball coaches. We have a great profession, and our players deserve to play postseason basketball.” In a world focused on individualism, Wyoming prioritizes teamwork.

The Cowboys will travel to Kansas to face the Wichita State Shockers on Tuesday night. Wichita State, part of the American Athletic Conference, finished second in the AAC with a 13-5 record and an overall mark of 22-11.

Familiar opponents for Wichita State include Boise State, Colorado State, and St. Mary’s. They split their season series with South Florida before losing to the Bulls in the AAC final. Currently, the Shockers are ranked No. 82 in KenPom, with key players including guard Kenyon Giles and forward Karon Boyd.

Wichita State boasts a top-30 defensive effective field goal percentage and a top-five offensive rebound percentage, along with 7-foot-2 junior Will Berg, who leads the team in blocks.

This matchup presents a significant opportunity for Wyoming to extend their season and build momentum as a new era of Mountain West basketball approaches. The game will air on ESPNU at 5:00 p.m. (Mountain Time), with the Shockers favored by 6.5 points. A victory would set Wyoming up against either Oklahoma State or Davidson.
