New Delhi, April 15: Goa’s Padma Shri awardee and 102-year-old freedom fighter, Libya Lobo Sardesai, expressed her views on the Women’s Reservation Bill on Wednesday. She welcomed the legislation but also described it as disappointing and a potential electoral tactic.
Speaking to reporters, Sardesai stated that while the bill is necessary, it has been 27 years since its proposal, and it remains unimplemented. “Now they say it will take another three years. It won’t come today or tomorrow,” she remarked.
She highlighted that women constitute 50% of the country’s population yet are limited to just 33% reservation. “Women have made significant progress and are capable of leading the nation, but they are not given the opportunity. This is very wrong,” she added. Sardesai insisted that the bill should have been passed immediately, questioning the need for further delays tied to census and delimitation processes. “Why the delay? They already know that half the population is women,” she emphasized.
Labeling the bill as an electoral stunt, Sardesai argued that it is not genuinely aimed at benefiting women but merely a strategy to attract female voters. “At least, that’s how it appears. Otherwise, why is it taking so long?” she questioned.
She also raised concerns about when women would receive true representation after the bill’s passage. “Women will get representation, but only three years later. We have already waited too long; we cannot wait any longer. Why are conditions like delimitation and census imposed only on women? Why don’t these rules apply to the representation of MPs and MLAs?”
Sardesai criticized political parties, noting that when Congress was in power, the BJP opposed the bill. Now that the BJP is in power, it criticizes Congress. “Neither party is taking this seriously. The BJP is using it merely as an electoral tactic,” she stated.
She firmly asserted that there should be no delay in implementing this bill and that it must be enacted as soon as possible, without any conditions.
