Rahul Gandhi Questions Timing of Womens Reservation Bill, Accuses Government of Deception

New Delhi, April 15: Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led central government on Wednesday. He accused the government of using the 2011 census to pass the Women’s Reservation Bill while a caste-based census is currently underway in the country.

In a post on the social media platform X, Gandhi stated that the government’s current proposal has nothing to do with women’s reservation. He described it as an attempt to seize power through arbitrary redistricting and manipulation of electoral constituencies.

His remarks came just a day before the extended budget session of Parliament, during which discussions are expected on amendments to the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, 2023’ aimed at providing one-third reservation for women, as well as a proposed delimitation bill.

Gandhi emphasized that the Congress party unequivocally supports women’s reservation, noting that Parliament had unanimously passed the bill in 2023.

Accompanying his post was a video message in which he highlighted the importance of this issue, particularly for marginalized communities, Dalits, tribal groups, and women. He alleged that the public is being deceived.

In the video, he stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not want the decision on women’s reservation to be based on the caste census, the new census, or the OBC census. Instead, he prefers to rely on the 2011 census, which does not account for the number of backward classes.

Gandhi accused the BJP of undermining the participation of backward classes, asserting that they do not want these communities to receive representation based on their actual population.
