Women Empowerment through Herbal Colors Initiative in Rudraprayag

New Delhi, March 1: In Rudraprayag, women self-help groups are pioneering the production of herbal colors. These colors are being made available in the district headquarters and nearby markets, promoting both self-employment for women and a shift away from chemical-based colors. Women from villages such as Jawadi, Kumoli, Maikot, Medanpur, and Ukhimath are actively creating herbal colors, which are in high demand in the market.

Sangeeta Kapravan, a member of the self-help group, stated, “We have created herbal colors using all-natural ingredients, priced at 25 rupees per packet.” She noted that many people are hesitant to use chemical colors due to concerns about skin damage. “We encourage people to buy these herbal colors, as they have no negative effects,” she added.

Monika Kapravan shared, “We have made organic colors at home, and there is a significant demand for these in the market.” She emphasized that these colors contain no chemicals and are made from homegrown flowers and other natural sources.

It is noteworthy that the National Rural Livelihood Mission and the Rural Training Institute provided training to women on how to create natural colors. Following this training, women have begun producing these colors in their villages. They are making green from spinach, yellow from turmeric, pink and red from beetroot, and saffron from marigold flowers, sending a clear message to avoid chemical-based colors.

The director and trainer of the Rural Self-Employment Institute remarked that the sale of these colors during the upcoming Holi festival will strengthen women’s livelihoods. He urged the local community to opt for indigenous and natural colors.

Bhupendra Rawat, a trainer at the Rural Self-Employment Training Institute, mentioned that in recent years, they have trained women in herbal color production. He highlighted the increasing demand for herbal colors during festivals, as people prefer to avoid chemicals. This year, herbal colors will be sold through various stalls.

Anup Kumar, the director of the Rural Self-Employment Training Institute, expressed, “I want everyone to know that our institute provides training in various self-employment opportunities, especially focusing on products for festivals.”
