New Delhi, July 23: A heated exchange erupted in the Rajya Sabha regarding the NEET exam issue, showcasing a divide between the government and the opposition. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the government is fully prepared for discussions on the matter. However, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge insisted that discussions can only commence after the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Amid the ongoing deadlock over the NEET exam controversy, Kharge reiterated his demand for the education minister’s resignation. He emphasized that the opposition is not shying away from discussions, but has been ready to engage from the start.
Addressing the Chairman, Kharge respectfully urged the government to provide a clear statement on the issue. He stated, “We are demanding the resignation of the education minister, and it should happen.” He highlighted that thousands of students across the country have been affected by the NEET controversy, leading to severe mental stress for many students and their families.
Kharge stressed that the government must prioritize the concerns and situations of the students. While the opposition is fully prepared to discuss the NEET issue, he asserted that accountability from the education minister is essential. “We have been ready for discussions from the beginning, but the resignation of the education minister is a must. Until that happens, discussions cannot begin,” he stated.
It is noteworthy that a continuous deadlock has persisted in both houses of Parliament due to allegations of irregularities and paper leaks concerning the NEET exam. The opposition remains firm in its demand for the education minister’s resignation, while the government claims it is ready to discuss the issue.
The opposition has also called for the Home Minister to provide a detailed statement in both houses, clarifying who is responsible for the police action against students and opposition leaders, as well as what actions will be taken against the culprits. Furthermore, they demand the immediate resignation of the education minister.
This standoff between the ruling party and the opposition is impacting parliamentary proceedings. For the fourth consecutive day, the Rajya Sabha’s sessions were disrupted, with question hour and zero hour proceedings being adjourned due to the ongoing uproar.
