Mumbai, August 12: The debate surrounding women’s freedom, their clothing, lifestyle choices, and personal decisions has been ongoing in society for years. However, in today’s world, women increasingly prefer to make their own choices. This often leads them to face scrutiny and criticism from others. Alpna Buch, known for her role as Leela Ba in the popular series ‘Anupama,’ shared her views on this issue, emphasizing that women’s personal decisions should not be linked to their character.
In an interview, Alpna Buch stated, “Women are still easily judged based on their choices. If a woman wears revealing clothes, stays out late, chooses not to marry at a certain age, or confidently expresses her opinions, some people in society immediately question her character and mindset. The real problem lies not in clothing or lifestyle but in the mindset that uses a woman’s choices against her freedom.”
Alpna further explained, “Often, clothing becomes just an excuse. People try to dictate how a woman should live based on her attire. We must stop questioning a woman’s choices. Until families, friends, and colleagues make an effort to understand and respect women’s decisions, genuine change in society cannot occur.”
She added, “Women’s freedom should not be viewed through a negative or rebellious lens. If a woman wants to live life on her own terms, labeling her as stubborn or rebellious is unjust. Freedom means having the right to make decisions about one’s life, not going against anyone.”
Alpna also discussed the role of television, stating, “TV shows have the power to influence societal thinking. Therefore, women who make their own decisions should be portrayed as normal on screen. If independent female characters are presented in a relatable and realistic manner, it could lead to a shift in societal attitudes.”
She expressed her thoughts on the generational differences in women’s perspectives, saying, “Freedom can mean different things to different generations. Older women have faced various challenges in their lives, and their confidence stems from those experiences. Meanwhile, younger women are more comfortable questioning norms and challenging old boundaries. Each generation has its strengths, and it’s not fair to label one as right or the other as wrong.”
Alpna concluded, “If women listen to each other’s decisions instead of comparing them, both generations can learn a lot from one another. I believe that the differences in age and experience should not create distance among women. Instead, these differences can serve as a means of understanding each other better.”
