Moscow, September 29 (Daily Kiran) : Russia has voiced its opposition to Iran potentially withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on Tuesday that Moscow hopes Tehran will remain a part of the agreement.
Peskov’s comments came in response to remarks from Iranian officials hinting at a possible exit from the NPT, which obligates Iran to refrain from developing or acquiring nuclear weapons. He emphasized the need for further clarification regarding these statements, asserting, “We would not want Iran to withdraw from the NPT.”
In a reaction to mounting pressure to halt its nuclear program, Iranian lawmakers have threatened to consider exiting the NPT. Reports on Monday indicated that Ali Nikzad, the deputy speaker of the Iranian parliament, reiterated this possibility.
Iran has consistently maintained that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. Recently, President Masoud Pezeshkian, during a visit to New York, stated that Iran would never pursue nuclear weapons. However, he also mentioned in an interview with CBS that Tehran is open to discussions about its nuclear program and other issues but will not accept “intimidation or pressure.”
International concerns have been raised about Iran’s uranium enrichment activities, which are nearing weapon-grade levels. Tehran denies any intentions of developing nuclear arms.
In recent years, Russia and Iran have developed closer strategic ties, supported by a strategic cooperation agreement. Russia has previously emphasized the importance of diplomatic solutions to the nuclear issue concerning Iran.
