Why Nutritious Food Isnt Reaching Millions: FAO Highlights Solutions on World Food Day

FAO emphasizes innovation to tackle hunger and improve food systems on World Food Day, addressing global food accessibility issues.

New Delhi, October 16 (Daily Kiran) : The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has raised critical questions on World Food Day, highlighting the paradox of global food production and hunger. Despite enough grain produced to feed everyone, millions still face hunger. Many cannot afford nutritious meals, prompting the question: Why isn’t healthy food reaching every table?

In response, the FAO has called for innovation to strengthen food systems. The theme for this year’s World Food Day is “Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow.” It aims to promote systems that not only provide nutritious food today but also safeguard natural resources for future generations.

Currently, around 640 million people worldwide are experiencing hunger, while 2.69 billion are unable to buy nutritious food. Factors such as conflict, economic instability, and climate change exacerbate this crisis. Simply producing more food is insufficient; it must also be delivered effectively to those in need.

Innovation plays a crucial role in enhancing food systems. Technology can transform farming, storage, transportation, and market access. Digital platforms can provide farmers with essential information on weather, crops, and agricultural practices. Utilizing better seeds, modern agricultural techniques, and managing water and land resources efficiently can also boost production.

Moreover, integrating traditional farming experiences with modern science is vital. Farmers, fishers, livestock keepers, and communities living in forest areas can strengthen food systems through their insights. Engaging women and youth in these efforts can create new opportunities.

Addressing hunger and malnutrition is not solely the responsibility of one individual or organization. It requires collaboration among governments, private companies, farmers, scientists, and the general public.

Governments can support by investing in agricultural research, improving infrastructure in rural areas, and creating favorable policies for farmers. The private sector can contribute by strengthening supply chains, generating job opportunities, and developing innovative business models.

Academic institutions and research centers also play a key role in disseminating new technologies and research to the fields. This can benefit farmers and make it easier to provide nutritious food to the population.

Food security is not just about ensuring access to food today. It is equally important to secure sufficient water, arable land, and other natural resources for future farming. Preparing for climate-related challenges and using resources responsibly can fortify food systems for years to come.
