Kolkata, June 17: Under the Swachh Bharat Mission, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari launched a special cleanup initiative at the Ganga ghat in Bagbazar, Kolkata, on Wednesday. Several ministers from his government joined him, collectively promoting the message of cleanliness along the Ganga.
Since the BJP-led government took office in the state, Chief Minister Adhikari has been actively working to rid the Ganga River and its ghats of pollution. On Wednesday morning, he visited the Bagbazar ghat, accompanied by the state’s Minister of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Agnimitra Paul, and Minister of Commerce and Industry, Tapas Roy.
Upon arrival, the Chief Minister planted a sapling to emphasize the importance of environmental conservation. He then performed rituals at a nearby temple, offering garlands to the deities. Following the prayers, Adhikari and the ministers took up brooms to clean the ghat, raising awareness about cleanliness among the public.
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari stated that such cleanup campaigns will continue throughout the year to keep the Ganga River and its ghats free from waste and pollution. He announced that this state-wide initiative was formally launched on Wednesday.
It is noteworthy that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Kolkata on June 21 for International Yoga Day, where he will participate in the main event at Red Road. The Chief Minister emphasized, “Our primary goal is to present a clean and beautiful Bengal to the Prime Minister.”
He also mentioned that the central government has been actively involved in the Namami Gange project, aimed at cleaning the Ganga, with PM Modi playing a significant role. The state government is now accelerating its efforts in the same direction.
Earlier this month, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that beautification and renovation of six major ghats along the Hooghly River in Kolkata and Howrah would be completed before the Durga Puja festivities in October.
