Kolkata, March 10: In anticipation of the upcoming assembly elections, the Kolkata Police has launched a special initiative to identify potential troublemakers in the city.
The police commissioner recently instructed anti-riot officers (AROs) at all police stations to compile a ‘rough register’ detailing the names and information of known troublemakers within their jurisdictions.
According to a senior official, this report was submitted to the Lalbazar police headquarters on Monday.
So far, the intelligence department has handed over the names of approximately 83 identified troublemakers to Lalbazar. These individuals have been reported from areas including Beleghata, Topsia, Kareya, Phoolbagan, and Bhanger police station jurisdictions, as well as newly included regions under Kolkata Police.
Additionally, troublemakers from Behala, Paranashree, and Thakurpukur have also been added to the list.
Officials at Lalbazar state that further identification of suspicious individuals is ongoing in these police station jurisdictions. As a precautionary measure against potential violence during the assembly elections, 83 individuals have been marked as potential troublemakers.
The list was compiled with the assistance of investigators from the intelligence department, utilizing data from the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections and the 2024 Indian general elections, including police records and charge sheets.
Sources indicate that the number of identified troublemakers may increase. Legal action has already been initiated against 64 individuals, while proceedings against the remaining 19 will commence shortly.
According to an internal police report, the most notorious criminals have been identified in the Behala and South-Eastern divisions of Kolkata Police, with 11 names recorded from each area. Bhanger and the Eastern division follow closely, with 10 names each.
Police officials note that past election experiences reveal that troublemaking elements become more active during voting periods. Consequently, strict actions have been mandated against long-absconding troublemakers.
While the dates for the assembly elections in the state have yet to be announced, police preparations are already underway as a precaution.
