Kolkata, August 17: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari assured on Monday that opportunities for employment will be created, encouraging the gradual return of migrant workers to the state through significant industrial investments.
The Chief Minister attended the groundbreaking ceremony for a greenfield integrated steel plant in Raghunathpur, Purulia district, which is set to cost ₹4,000 crore.
He stated, “I assure the migrant workers of West Bengal that they will have the opportunity to return to the state. There will be no shortage of jobs. We have plans for large-scale industrialization. This steel plant in Raghunathpur will provide direct and indirect employment to around 10,000 people. Local tribal youth will also find jobs, leading to overall development in the region.”
This marks the state’s second steel plant. The Chief Minister initiated the groundbreaking process last month. Recently, an integrated steel plant worth ₹15,000 crore was inaugurated in Mejia, Bankura district.
On Monday, he also inaugurated a drinking water pipeline project in Manbazar, Purulia, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). He announced that ISKCON will soon start providing mid-day meals in all government schools in Purulia district.
The Chief Minister added, “In addition to the meals provided by ISKCON, students in government schools will receive eggs twice a week, similar to the program in Kolkata. Jobs related to mid-day meal preparation for women will also be secured.”
He further declared that this year, there will be a government holiday in the tribal-dominated districts of Bankura and Purulia on the festival of Maa Mansa, recognizing the widespread worship of the serpent goddess among tribal communities.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that the administration will organize welfare camps to assist with applications for widow pensions, old-age pensions, and allowances for the disabled. Unlike previous state governments, which held welfare camps that were often inaccessible, these will be organized in easily reachable locations to benefit more people.
