Pakistans Fight Against Polio Faces Setback with Eighth Case Reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

A new polio case in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa marks the eighth this year, raising concerns about vaccination efforts in Pakistan.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, November 2 (Daily Kiran) : A recent polio case has emerged in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, marking the eighth instance of the disease reported this year. This development poses a significant challenge to ongoing efforts to eradicate polio in the country. Despite numerous vaccination campaigns, it highlights ongoing gaps in vaccine accessibility for children.

According to reports from Geo News, a 13-month-old girl from the Bara Tehsil’s Union Council Janbaz-B has tested positive for the virus. This is the second polio case reported in Khyber District this year and the sixth across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, raising alarms about the continued risk to children’s health in the region.

Officials have acknowledged that environmental surveillance in the Peshawar block, which includes both Khyber and Peshawar districts, has revealed traces of the polio virus. This indicates that the virus remains active in the area, posing a persistent threat to public health.

In response, the Pakistan Polio Eradication Initiative (PEI) has launched an investigation into the case and is devising strategies to curb the virus’s spread. These strategies include intensified vaccination campaigns and bolstering routine immunization efforts.

To date, Pakistan has conducted four major polio vaccination drives in 2026, reaching over 45 million children with multiple doses of the vaccine. Additionally, targeted campaigns have been implemented in high-risk zones, particularly in the Peshawar block, providing both oral and injectable vaccines.

A sub-national campaign in September successfully reached approximately 29.3 million children. The next vaccination initiative is scheduled from November 2 to 8, aiming to administer polio doses to around 24 million children across 97 districts, including Khyber District.

Historically, Pakistan has made significant strides in reducing polio cases, dropping from an estimated 20,000 cases in the early 1990s to just 31 in 2025. However, the emergence of new cases underscores that the virus has not been entirely eradicated.

Of the eight cases reported this year, six are from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with four linked to southern regions and two from Sindh province. Polio is a highly contagious disease with no cure, often leading to lifelong paralysis or even death in severe cases. Vaccination remains the most effective means of prevention.

The report emphasizes that while continuous vaccination campaigns have led to polio eradication in most countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan remain the last two nations where the polio virus continues to spread.
