Kolkata, June 28: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited the family of BJP worker Prashant Day, who was killed in political violence in the Bagnan area of Howrah district. During the visit, he assured the family of compensation and justice.
So far, 10 out of 51 individuals named in the FIR have been arrested. The Chief Minister ordered the immediate arrest of the remaining 41 accused, stating that they would be apprehended even if they went underground.
CM Adhikari has already assigned the investigation of Prashant’s murder to the CBI. Following his directives, the CID commenced its investigation on June 21. On Saturday afternoon, the Chief Minister visited Prashant’s ancestral home in Bagnan, where he paid his respects by placing a garland on the deceased’s photograph. He then proceeded to the Bagnan police station to discuss the case with police and CID officials, emphasizing the need for the arrest of the remaining suspects.
The Chief Minister made it clear that no one would be spared in Prashant’s case. He mentioned that investigators might need to conduct an in-depth probe to locate the accused.
According to him, some individuals were brutally attacked with lethal weapons, and a few are still receiving treatment at a Kolkata hospital, where they underwent surgery under the state government’s special supervision.
He expressed regret that Prashant could not be saved, stating that he had been monitoring the case from the beginning.
The Howrah District Magistrate’s office has already provided the family with ₹4 lakh in compensation. On Saturday, the Chief Minister announced an additional ₹5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. He also declared that Prashant’s elder daughter would be offered a contract-based job at the BDO office.
The Chief Minister stated that while money cannot replace a life, it is his duty to support the family, especially if there is no breadwinner.
He confirmed that he had arranged a job for the elder daughter at the BDO office according to regulations and that further considerations would be made regarding the family’s needs.
Additionally, the Chief Minister instructed the District Magistrate to arrange for old-age pensions for Prashant’s parents. He emphasized the responsibility to ensure that every accused is apprehended and punished according to the law.
He stated that he had communicated with the police and given clear instructions for a charge sheet to be filed during the custody of the arrested individuals. After the charge sheet is filed, he will also appoint a special public prosecutor.
Prashant’s death occurred during a recent clash between the Trinamool Congress and BJP. Sheikh Mofizul Islam, the deputy head of the Antila Gram Panchayat, had been absent from the area since the announcement of the assembly election results.
When he returned on June 18, several BJP workers had gathered outside his home, leading to heightened tensions in the area within minutes.
It is alleged that Mofizul and his associates attacked the BJP workers, resulting in a violent altercation. Many individuals were seriously injured, and Prashant was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
