Bhopal, March 21: The Water Ganga Conservation Campaign has officially launched in Madhya Pradesh. This initiative aims to revitalize various water structures across the state. Eighteen government departments are collaborating on this project to breathe new life into the state’s water resources.
Under this campaign, extensive efforts are being made to protect water sources and raise awareness among the public. With coordinated efforts from different departments, the preservation and rejuvenation of ponds, wells, check dams, and other water structures are being undertaken in villages across the state.
Mohan Yadav’s government has initiated activities under the Water Ganga Conservation Campaign. The campaign involves participation from 18 government departments, with the Panchayat and Rural Development Department serving as the nodal agency, and the Urban Administration and Housing Department as the co-nodal agency.
The campaign aims to construct new water conservation structures through community participation and collaboration among various departments. Activities will include groundwater conservation, cleaning and repairing water structures, and removing encroachments on these structures. Additionally, water quality testing in schools and implementing roof water harvesting in anganwadis and industrial units will also be part of the initiative.
Efforts will be made to reduce pollution levels in water sources and to clean water distribution systems. Preparations will be made to document water conservation structures and canals in revenue records, along with planting activities during the monsoon season. The Urban Development Department has devised a plan for the restoration of water conservation structures under the Amrit 2.0 scheme and for treating drains that flow into rivers. The goal is to enhance ponds, rivers, and stepwells while removing encroachments.
Rainwater harvesting systems will be established, and green areas will be developed. To encourage youth participation in water conservation, registrations will be conducted on the ‘My Bharat’ portal as Amrit Mitras. Public drinking water facilities will also be arranged at key urban locations through community cooperation during the summer months.
The campaign includes groundwater enhancement projects covering approximately 1.25 lakh hectares under the watershed treatment plan by the Forest Department. The Agriculture Department will construct the Balram Pond and Line Farm Pond, while the Environment Department will specifically survey the Betwa, Kshipra, Kanha, and Ganga rivers to identify points of contaminated water. Responsibilities for other departments have also been clearly defined.
