New Delhi, August 26: Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with Union Minister for Power and Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, at his official residence in New Delhi on Wednesday. The two leaders engaged in extensive discussions regarding the state’s energy requirements, power infrastructure, and various urban development issues.
During the meeting, Chief Minister Sarma outlined the state government’s efforts to achieve energy independence and promote consumer-friendly electricity reforms. They deliberated on the long-term electricity needs of Assam and how to utilize power from central generation units more effectively and rationally.
The discussion also included strengthening the electricity distribution network in Guwahati. They considered proposals for laying underground power cables in the city, aimed at enhancing the reliability and safety of power supply while modernizing urban electricity infrastructure.
Both leaders addressed the improved utilization of natural gas for electricity generation in Assam, particularly concerning the availability and pricing of natural gas for gas-based power plants.
The Chief Minister also presented the Assam government’s proposal under the Urban Challenge Fund. This initiative aims to develop integrated urban areas with a focus on health services, sports facilities, and climate-resilient infrastructure, addressing the new demands arising from increasing urbanization and development in the state.
After the meeting, Chief Minister Sarma posted on the social media platform ‘X,’ stating that Assam is working towards achieving energy independence and implementing large-scale reforms with consumer interests in mind. He noted that the Union Minister assured full support from the ministry for these efforts.
Sarma further mentioned that there was a positive discussion regarding the proposal under the Urban Challenge Fund, which aims to develop integrated urban areas focused on health, sports, and climate-resilient infrastructure.
Union Minister Manohar Lal also shared details on ‘X,’ indicating that the meeting covered significant topics related to energy and urban development in Assam. He highlighted discussions on the state’s long-term electricity needs, better utilization of energy allocated from central power projects, strengthening the electricity distribution network in Guwahati through underground cabling, and the availability and pricing of natural gas for gas-based power generation.
He reiterated the central government’s commitment to empowering Assam’s energy and urban infrastructure under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, assuring all possible support.
This meeting reflects the joint commitment of both the central and state governments to develop sustainable, robust, and consumer-centric energy and urban infrastructure in Assam.
