Wang Yi Discusses Middle East Situation with French Presidential Advisor

Beijing, March 22: Wang Yi, a member of the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party and Director of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission, engaged in a phone conversation on March 20 with Emmanuel Bonne, the French presidential advisor on foreign affairs. They extensively discussed the current situation in the Middle East.

Both parties expressed serious concerns regarding the escalating tensions and the potential for conflict expansion, emphasizing the need for joint efforts towards a resolution. Emmanuel Bonne shared his insights on the current circumstances in the Middle East, including issues related to Iran and Lebanon. He noted that both France and China are significant powers that support the role of the United Nations, adhere to international law, and advocate for resolving differences through dialogue. He stressed that in the current context, both nations should collaborate to find concrete pathways to de-escalate tensions and resume negotiations.

Bonne also clarified that France is prepared to strengthen its communication and cooperation with China to promote the swift restoration of peace and stability in the Middle East.

During the conversation, Wang Yi articulated China’s position, stating that the situation in the Middle East is continuously deteriorating, with an expanding scope of conflict. This not only threatens the stability of global energy supplies but also creates a severe humanitarian crisis. He emphasized that given the gravity of the current circumstances, the responsibilities of China and France as permanent members of the United Nations Security Council are heightened. Both countries should enhance strategic communication and coordination, firmly uphold the UN Charter and international law, and work together to prevent the world from reverting to a so-called “law of the jungle.”
