New Delhi, September 26 (Udaipur Kiran News). Vodafone Idea (Vi), India’s third-largest telecom operator, is preparing to compete with Elon Musk’s Starlink, though not in the same way. While Starlink is a satellite internet provider, Vi has partnered with AST Spacemobile to deliver space-based cellular services directly to regular smartphones.

Coverage beyond terrestrial limits
Through this partnership, Vodafone Idea aims to extend coverage to remote and hard-to-reach areas, including forests and rural regions where traditional mobile networks often fail. Similarly, Starlink recently announced its Direct-to-Cell services, designed to enable calling and data directly via satellites. This puts both services in overlapping territory, even though their technologies differ.
Competitive edge for Vi
For Vodafone Idea, this move represents a distinct strategy compared to rivals Airtel and Reliance Jio. By integrating satellite-powered connectivity, Vi is positioning itself to enhance user experience and address coverage gaps nationwide.
Regulatory approvals pending
Vodafone Idea already holds the necessary regulatory approvals to move ahead. However, AST Spacemobile will also need clearance from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Specifically, the company requires a GMPCS (Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite) license before services can launch in India.
Industry experts believe the Vi–AST Spacemobile partnership will help streamline distribution and adoption, making satellite connectivity more accessible to Indian users once approvals are secured.
